"I feel like I haven't seen you in forever!" James says to me.
"Yea, it has been two months." I say like I don't care.
"What's wrong?" He said pushing my hair out of my face.
"Nothing, want to go get lunch?" I say leaning in for a kiss.
"Yea, let's go eat." He said grabbing his bag and putting an arm around my shoulder.
We walked over to a small diner about two blocks away from the bus station where I waited for him. My car is still there, I fed the meter for an hour so we are good to eat. I stayed at the counter and ordered us burgers, fries, and shakes. I go and sit across from him and I set my phone on the table. They ring the bell and call my name so I get up to get the food. As I came back to my seat I saw James going through my phone and I froze.
"Who is texting you like this?" James asked horrified.
"I don't know, all of my friends know about this and their friends know too. People are asking people if they know anyone who did it, and it is a huge mess." I said sitting down and taking a sip of my chocolate shake.
"Why didn't you tell me while I was in Indiana for the summer?" He asked genuine concern hitting his eyes.
"I didn't tell you because of that look. That look in your eyes. And because bullies are just people who need to feel better about themselves by bringing someone else down. The person is just afraid to say it to my face so they hide behind an anonymous number." I say my eyes stinging.
"The look of concern for your safety?" He said sympathetic.
"I don't need nor want your sympathy. I am getting too much from my friends." I say looking into his deep blues.
"Hey," he said switching benches, "it is okay, no one is going to hurt you. I won't let them." He said hugging me as tight as I'd hoped.
"I love you." I said hugging him back.
"I love you too." He said kissing the top of my head.
